4. Promote and model digital citizenship and responsibilityAs in the real world, educators must be a role model for their students when using digital tools. Teachers must develop an action plan for addressing digital citizenship for their students' lives inside and outside the classroom. Teach and model safe, legal, and ethical use of digital tools and content. Provide access to all students and adapt digital experiences for those with various needs. Promote etiquette and appropriate interactions while using any digital app, site, or program by creating opportunities for discussion and collaboration in social and formal contexts.
How I Meet Standard No. 4A good chunk of the content educators impart to their students is implicit curriculum including social, moral, and cultural cues. With appropriate and productive digital behaviors, I am modeling to my students how tech and digital resources can and should be utilized. This does not mean limiting a students digital experience but expanding it. There are endless ways we can direct our digital energy for learning, discovery, and practice. Of course with the ever increasing use of tech and digital resources in the classroom, educators should be encouraged to include explicit curriculum on digital citizenship. Just as we encourage ethical, safe, and productive behaviors in real life, we need to do the same for students' digital lives. After all, a large part of a student's time in school is for practicing and developing the processes and behaviors that will help them succeed as adults. For my elementary students, I put together a fun and developmentally appropriate Powtoon presentation on the ins and outs of digital citizenship. Powtoon is just one of many powerpoint/video applications educators can use to create engaging presentations. Please check it out below to see exactly how we can keep students cognizant of the impact of their online behaviors in and beyond the classroom. I also shared a link to my blog and Twitter account where I model the type of digital presence I hope to convey to my students and colleagues. Being courteous, mindful, and engaged in all digital interactions is key to making the most of the experience. When we communicate professionally online, colleagues and peers are more apt to respond positively.

With my blog I am able to develop my professional voice and practice communicating ideas, reflections, and evaluations of content, material, and theory. By doing so I am modeling proper digital etiquette and purpose for my students.

With my Twitter account, I model professional interaction and engagement for my students and colleagues on a local and global scale.
